The skycar: Will they really let us use them?

I've just stopped to eat a little lunch at my desk and read the news on news.bbc.co.uk.  Whilst reading I noticed a link to a video of the Moller skycar which apparently will be ready for sale within months.

If you've not heard of the Skycar look here,  here and here.

Imagine the chaos you could cause with a vertical take off and landing aircraft which can fly at a maximum height of 10 ft (for the ground effect version which would be the one targeted at non-pilots).  I can imagine there would need to be a fair amount of thought put into the next version of the highway code

Seriously though I wonder if the authorities are prepared to see these put to practical use and if so I wonder how long it'll be before they're commonplace?

The MX200 looks like it'll retail at 50000 GBP (with any luck mass production would bring that price down) - if the cost were comparable to family size car then we'd have an interesting choice.

I'm fighting the temptation to dismiss the Skycar as a novelty doomed to failure like Sinclairs' C5.  I want it to succeed and with just a small lottery win I could be amongst the first to have one.

People sometimes talk about the days when car ownership was rare and driving on the 'open road' was a pleasure this could be a second bite of the cherry.

There's a super all singing all dance sports version that looks like a cross between a Harrier and a Lear jet - I want that one

Moller have a page of videos here.  The Skycar rescue video raised a laugh in our little geeky part of the office.

Ah well back to work - ttfn.
