Rememberence Sunday

This Sunday is rememberence Sunday here (UK).  As usual I'll be with my colleagues from the Special Constabulary who'll be closing our little town centre to traffic and helping people pay their respects to the dead.

This act of rememberence means a great deal to me and I tend to get a bit maudlin remembering what these men and women (and animals) gave up.  Sadly every year we get people who should know asking "What's happened?" (why are we closing the roads) and demonstrating real ignorance when we explain.  Sometimes we have to deal with peoples anger and disobediance (that we're preventing them from driving through a crowd of people to get to an ATM for example).

I have no idea what kind of history is being taught in schools these days

I occaisionally read memoirs and whilst listening to radio 4 I heard about this one:  www.greatgrandfatherswar.com

Whether or not you're planing to observe the rememberence I hope you have a great weekend

TTFN,
Jason

Hi Jason - I now work for The Thistle Foundation here in Edinburgh. http://www.thistle-foundation.biz/section/default.asp?p=44&s=2 who's history you can read on this link (assuming this converts links - let me know if it doesn't). It was set up for wounded vets of WW1 and, although it's remit is now for physically-disabled individuals who are not vets, there is still part of the Foundation that is dedicated to ensuring that there is a service each week in the Chapel - which was built for the Founders' son - and a special service on Remembrance Sunday. I think it is very special and I am so glad that it is maintained.
